Elle had been worried about their relationship. Not because anything had happened! Actually the exact opposite: it was amazing. Angus really cared about her, valued her opinions and dreams. They got through so much together, and all in the span of six weeks.

Only six weeks.

That was the part Elle was actually worried about. Their relationship was still so new and had been forged under such strange and strenuous circumstances, what happened to them after they went home? Angus was supportive of her finishing Harvard, and she wanted him to go tend to responsibilities in Fife. Would they get back to their lives and realize that the love they thought they shared was just some kind of extreme trauma bonding? Or worse, would they see each other again and realize that outside of the school they were simply...incompatible.

She spins the ring on her finger, the one she carries on a chain around her neck when she's with her parents. What is she suppose to tell them? Oh yeah, went on a study abroad trip to Scotland for the summer, met a guy and got engaged before even telling you about him! They'd think she'd gone insane. Angus said he understands, that he was fine with it, but how long until he isn't fine with it?

Fall semester passes in a flurry of reading and classes and reading and calls with Angus and more reading. She officially turns Emmett down, but he's amazing enough to stay her friend. (It's honestly weird being friends with so many guys who doesn't see her as a prize to be won.) She tells him about Angus, and he seems genuinely happy for her, commiserates that long-distance relationships can be hard, but worth it. There's long-distance, then there's literally living in different universes.

It's probably just the finals brain making her extra paranoid, Elle tells herself. Next week is the last week of the semester, then she's off to her parents. Angus is too busy with things in Fife to visit for longer than a couple of days near around New Year, and that's fine.

Really, it is. They need the distance. It'll be good for them. Really.

There's a knock on her dorm door that snaps Elle out of her spiral of thoughts. Probably Emmett coming to drop off food, or Vivienne for some last-minute studying.

"Coming!" She drags herself out of her chair and to the door. Her hair is a mess and she isn't wearing any makeup, but both of them had seen her in more disastrous states.

On the other side of the door is Angus, a full universe away from where he was suppose to be, holding a case of Red Bull and a two boxes from from the pizza place on the corner she likes. His grin is wide and his eyes sparkle.

She's suddenly very aware of the huge mustard stain on the oversized t-shirt she uses to sleep in.

Angus doesn't seem to notice, or if he does he doesn't care.

"Angus!" Butterflies erupt in her stomach as she gestures him in.

"Surprise! I came to help you study!" He sets the pizza and energy drinks down on her bed, then turns to envelope her in the best hug she's had since they separated.

"But what about Fife? I thought you had stuff to do?"

He kisses the top of her head. "Ralathor said he could take care of everything for a few weeks." He pulls back, sudden worry in his face. "It's okay, right? I know you're busy, if you need me to leave, I can always go visit the penthouse for a few days."

"No!" Elle blurts out. Maybe they need space, but she doesn't want space. Seeing him here, now, makes her realize how much she missed him. How much she wants to be with him.

How much she loves him.

"No, this is amazing." She pulls away enough to open the pizza box. Thin crust with spinach, chicken, and olives. Her favorite. Tears burn behind her eyes, the stress of finals finally catching up with her.

"Elle? Are you okay?"

Elle nods and pulls him in for another hug, burying her face in his chest, focusing on the soft fabric of his t-shirt and the smell of fresh grass and soot she's come to associate with him. His arms encircle her again, one hand smoothing down her tangled hair in a soothing motion.

"I missed you so much," she says, her words muffled by his chest.

"I missed you too."

"Can we snuggle while I study?"

"Of course."

It takes a minute or so for her to pull back. They sit on the floor and eat the pizza straight from the box as Angus regales her with the goings-on in Fife. Elle tells him about her classes as they finish off the brownies from the second box. True to his word, they snuggle on her bed as she goes through the last two cases for her final in the morning.

Settling down to share her tiny dorm bed for the night reminds her of being back at Gershwin, but without the impending doom looming over their heads. He drops a kiss on to her shoulder and murmurs encouragements about her test as she closes her eyes and it makes her wonder what she was even worried about in the first place.
